Air pollution linked to increased risks for venous thromboembolism
Health, News.
Adults in the U.S. who had greater long-term exposure to three types of air pollutants were more likely to have increased risks for venous thromboembolism, which includes two types of blood clots: deep vein thrombosis, which occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein of the legs, arms, or an internal organ, and pulmonary embolism, which occurs when a blood clot breaks off from a deep vein and travels to the lungs.
The researchers underscore the importance of increased awareness about risks for VTE. They also note global efforts are needed to reduce air pollution levels to support public health.
