Two U.S. Army pilots, in the early days of military aviation, in the mid-1930s, in an era of open cockpits and biplanes, are always trying to do each other, in a friendly rivalry. The two pilots are picked to go on a dangerous mission into the stratosphere, with a balloon, to test high altitude flight.


A butterfly collector unwittingly wanders into an Indian encampment while chasing a butterfly. This tribe has resolved to kill the first white man who enters their encampment because white oil tycoons are trying to force them from their land.


Captain Crewe, called to fight in the Second Boer War, has to leave his daughter Sara (Shirley Temple) with her pony at Miss Minchin's School for Girls.
